Derbyshire Bilingual Crisis Buddies Service

Derbyshire Bilingual Crisis Buddy Service - DBCBS

Do you work with people in crisis who don't speak English as their first language?

The DBCBS is a five year project funded by the Big Lottery's Help Through Crisis strand. It is designed to help people who are experiencing some form of difficulty (crisis) in their life such as homelessness, unemployment, finance, family or health issues and whose first language is not English.

A partnership of six organisations are involved in the project:

Direct Help and Advice (lead partner)

Derbyshire Law Centre

St James Centre

LINKS CVS

Derbyshire Unemployed Workers Centre

Community Action Derby

The project is designed to support up to 90 people a year across Derbyshire with support being provided by up to 40 bilingual crisis buddies - paid sessional workers - who have experience of receiving advice from agencies and can act as advocates for people in crisis, talking to people in their own language to make sure they understand the advice they receive to alleviate their situation. Buddies can also accompany people to appointments if necessary.

The project is not an advice project.

The project is operational across the whole of Derbyshire and Derby city.
