One of our recent successful funding bids was for Spondon Horticultural Society which has allotments in Lousie Greaves Lane in Spondon. The society wanted to encourage more people to take on allotments and make them more accessible so that people would visit and spend more time there - and it was felt that being able to offer toilet facilities would be a great advantage. After contacting Nick and Liz in our Development Team a successful funding application was made to the Big Lottery’s Awards for All programme and the Society now boasts toilet facilities onsite - and not just any toilets but eco-friendly toilets!
The allotments encourage improved health and wellbeing through enabling people to be more active, spend time outside and grow their own fruit and vegetables. And thanks to the new fully accessible facilities more families and disabled people will be able to take up plots and enjoy the benefits of growing their own produce and learning new skills.
An added advantage of the eco-toilets is that after a period of time compost can be obtained from them which will then be available for allotment holders to use on their plots! Eco-toilets are a great option for allotments as they generally don’t have waste drainage or electricity on site.
