Derby Arboretum is a Grade II listed landscape that was gifted to the people of Derby by local mill owner and benefactor Joseph Strutt on 16 and 17 September 1840. It is the oldest public park in the country and it inspired the design of Central Park in New York. On its opening day in 1840, brass bands marched from the town centre with crowds following. It was a wonderful day for the people of Derby; when they arrived at the park there were entertainers and a hot air balloon was floating high.
